Web 2.0 Expo - Monday, April 16, 2007 Afternoon Sessions

In the afternoon there I attended one session and then the keynotes.

Session 1: Tagging that Works, Thomas Vander Wal, InfoCloud Solutions, Inc.

For the last two years tagging has become hot, hot, hot. I'll go into more with my post for Tuesday's keynotes which had a lot of stats. For now let's focus on what it is, how it's used etc. Oh and one note for those who love tagging, SpaceRef will be using tagging on some of it's sites soon. (Breaking news for anyone who cares.)

Described - Simple data/metadata externally applied to an object
- Used for sorting
- a hook for aggregating
- provides identifier and/or description
- personal markers

Folksonomy
- is the result of personal free tagging of pages and objects for one's own retrieval
- The taggings is usually done in social environment (shared and open to others)
- Triad: Object, Identity, Metadata

Folksonomy vs Taxonomy
- Value of tagging for Business
- Tagging for business intranet refindability!

- Who tags? 7% of US people on the web tag, Amazon does tags well, del.icio.us an innovator.

Keynotes: I didn't many notes here, just listened to what was being said. Amazon web services looks like something to check out. An example of the cost effectiveness of using Amazon web services was Jeff Bezo's personal project Blue Origin. Blue Origin test launch video used 785 GB data transfer in one day, yet the monthly bill was $300+ for the month. That's super cheap. And they were able to scale to meet the demand on the fly. Pretty cool.
